Terms governing your use of Sumi

2026/10/01

Last updated: October 1, 2026

These terms govern your use of Sumi: the iPhone and iPad app (including the Sumi Safari extension that ships with it), the mangasumi.com website, the Sumi extensions for Chrome and Firefox, and the Sumi app for Android distributed on Google Play. By installing or using any of them, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please uninstall and stop using them.

One Sumi account

Your Sumi account holds your pages, your daily free pages and your subscription. They are the same in the iPhone and iPad app, the Safari extension, the Android app, the Chrome and Firefox extensions and on mangasumi.com, wherever you bought them:

You sign in with Apple, Google or a one-time email code. Use the same sign-in on every device to reach the same account.

  • iPhone and iPad. On a new install, cloud translation, free pages and purchases need a Sumi account; reading your own files, offline translation and restoring purchases do not. If you used the app before Sumi accounts existed, you can keep using the pages on that device without signing in, and sign in whenever you like.
  • Your first sign-in on an iPhone or iPad copies the pages already on it into your account and adds an App Store subscription bought on it. The pages also stay on the device, for when you are signed out. Some pages bought in older versions of the app can only be used on the device they were bought on; the app shows you when that applies. A device's pages are copied into one account only, once.
  • Signed out on an iPhone or iPad, the app uses the pages on that device. Your account's pages, and an App Store subscription held by the account, apply again when you sign back in.
  • The offline buy-out belongs to the Apple Account that bought it — use Restore Purchases — not to the Sumi account.
  • One subscription per account. An account can have one active subscription at a time, from the App Store, Google Play or the website. If the account already has one and the iPhone or iPad you sign in on has a different App Store subscription, the sign-in is undone and nothing changes; cancel one of them, or sign in with another account.

What you get — iPhone and iPad app

  • Free pages: a new install comes with 15 welcome pages, added to your account when you sign in. After that, your account can claim 5 more pages each UTC day — once per account per day, in whichever app, extension or site you claim. Unclaimed days do not accumulate. If you used the app before Sumi accounts existed and stay signed out, the device claims its 5 pages a day on its own; once its pages are in an account, it claims through the account.
  • Subscriptions (auto-renewing): Sumi Pro, and Sumi Pro+ and Sumi Studio where the app offers them, at the price the App Store shows you. Each carries the same page limit as the plan of the same name on the website (see The fair-use limit). Apple decides when a change between plans takes effect, and the app shows it before you confirm.
  • Page packs (200, 1,000 or 3,000 pages, one-time, at the price the app shows you): pages that never expire, added to your account when you are signed in, or to the device when you are not.
  • Offline buy-out (one-time purchase): the on-device translation pipeline. Models are downloaded once to your device; afterwards translation runs locally, with no page limit and no network. Its current price is the one shown in the app — it is promotional from time to time.
  • The Sumi Safari extension draws from the same pages as the app: the account's when the app is signed in, the device's when it is not.

What you get — website and browser extensions

On the website and in the Chrome and Firefox extensions

  • Signed out: 1 page per day, so you can try the tool before creating an account.
  • Free account: 5 pages on sign-up, granted automatically. Every UTC day after that, 5 more you can claim from your dashboard — those arrive when you claim them, not on their own. Sign-up day is covered by the welcome pages and does not also pay a daily claim.
  • Sumi Pro ($6.99 / month or $69.99 / year, auto-renewing): cloud translation with a fair-use limit of 1,500 pages per billing month.
  • Sumi Pro+ ($14.99 / month or $149.99 / year, auto-renewing): the same, with a fair-use limit of 4,000 pages per billing month.
  • Sumi Studio ($39.99 / month or $399.99 / year, auto-renewing): the same, with a fair-use limit of 12,000 pages per billing month.
  • The three plans differ only in the page limit; every plan gets the same translation quality, the same languages and the same tools.
  • You can move between plans at any time from your billing page. A change takes effect immediately and the difference for the rest of the period is charged or credited at once.
  • The Sumi extensions for Chrome and Firefox draw from your Sumi account balance. Sign in to the extension with the same account you use on the site.

In the Android app

  • A Sumi account is required. The app does not translate while signed out; you sign in to your Sumi account in your browser and approve the app.
  • Daily free pages require signing in. A new account starts with 5 pages. On each later UTC day the account can claim 5 more — once per account per day, whichever app, extension or site you claim in.
  • Purchases are billed by Google Play. Subscriptions (Sumi Pro and Sumi Pro+) and one-time page packs are sold in the app at the price the app shows you, and what you buy is added to your Sumi account.
  • One active subscription per account (see One Sumi account). To change where you pay, cancel the current subscription and let its paid period end first.
  • A subscription bought in the app carries the same page limit as the plan of the same name on the website.

The fair-use limit

Cloud translation on a subscription is not unlimited. Your allowance is counted per billing month: it refreshes at the start of each billing month (for yearly plans, on the same day each month as your renewal date). Unused pages do not carry over.

Wherever you bought the plan — App Store, Google Play or the website — the limit is 1,500 pages on Sumi Pro, 4,000 on Sumi Pro+, 12,000 on Sumi Studio, per billing month. Sumi Studio is not sold in the Android app. If you change plans mid-period, the pages you have already used in that billing month still count; the new plan's limit applies from the moment of the change, and the full new allowance is available from the start of your next billing month.

If you reach it, we first draw from any page credits already on your account, and only then ask you to wait for your next billing month.

The offline buy-out is genuinely unlimited — it runs entirely on your device and never touches our servers.

Page packs — apps only

  • In the iPhone and iPad app, one-time page packs are on sale (see above).
  • In the Android app, one-time page packs are sold through Google Play and added to your Sumi account.
  • On the website, page packs were retired on 27 July 2026 and are no longer sold. Packs bought there before then are still valid on your Sumi account and do not expire — retiring them removed the shelf, not your balance.

Wherever you bought them, pack pages do not expire and are only drawn on after your subscription's monthly quota is used up. A subscription never burns pages you paid for separately.

What we expect from you

  • Use Sumi only for content you have the legal right to read and translate (e.g. manga you own, public domain works, scanlations you are allowed to consume in your jurisdiction).
  • Sumi does not host, crawl, or provide a catalog of manga. It translates what is already in front of you — a file you imported, or a page you opened yourself.
  • Don't use Sumi as part of a service that re-sells our translations, scrapes us at scale, or otherwise abuses the API. Per-device and per-account rate-limits exist and we reserve the right to revoke entitlements that show abuse patterns.
  • Don't attempt to reverse-engineer the on-device or server-side models beyond what is necessary for personal interoperability.

Purchases, subscriptions, refunds

Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel, wherever you bought them. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not refund the period you are in. Deleting the app or your Sumi account does not cancel a subscription.

App Store (iPhone and iPad app). Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. The subscription renews automatically unless it is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; the renewal is charged within 24 hours before the period ends. Manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. We never see your payment details. For refunds, use Apple's process for requesting a refund; if Apple refunds a subscription, it ends on your Sumi account.

Website. Payment is processed by Stripe; we never see your card details. Manage, change, or cancel your subscription at mangasumi.com/settings/billing, which opens the Stripe customer portal. Changing plans takes effect immediately and the price difference for the rest of the period is charged or credited at once.

Google Play (Android app). Payment is charged to your Google Play account; we never see your payment details. Manage or cancel a subscription in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Refunds for purchases made in the Android app follow Google Play's refund policies — request one through Google Play. If Google Play refunds a subscription, it ends on your Sumi account.

Website refunds. Email hello@mangasumi.com within 3 days of a charge and we refund that charge, provided you have used no more than 10% of your plan's monthly pages since it — 150 pages on Pro, 400 on Pro+, 1,200 on Studio. A payment-processing fee of up to 6% may be deducted from the amount refunded. Refund requests are read and answered by a person, usually within one business day. A refund ends the subscription immediately; unused pages from the refunded period are not kept. Outside that window, or past that usage, we still make it right when Sumi did not deliver what you paid for — write to us and say what happened. Opening a chargeback with your card issuer also ends the subscription immediately; emailing us first is faster for both of us.

Service availability

Cloud translation depends on third-party services (Cloudflare, OpenRouter, Google) and is provided "as is". We aim for high availability but do not promise an uptime SLA in this version.

The offline tier keeps working without the network once the models are downloaded.

Liability

To the maximum extent allowed by law, Sumi is provided without warranty and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of it — including any translation errors that may affect how you understand a story. Machine translation makes mistakes; check anything that matters.

Changes

We may update these terms. When we do, we'll bump the "Last updated" date and call out major changes in the release notes.
