About Sumi

We wanted to read the manga nobody had translated yet.

A lot of what we love is never published in our language — or arrives years late. So we built a reader that translates the page without breaking it, and then kept going until it worked on a phone with the network off.

You bring the chapters

Sumi does not host, crawl, or resell manga. It translates a page you already have — a volume you bought, an official free chapter, a public-domain title. Your library stays yours, and nothing about it is uploaded except the page you ask us to translate.

The page should still look drawn

Pasting a white box over a balloon is easy, and it ruins the panel. Sumi erases the original lettering and re-typesets your language inside the shape that was already there — tall balloons keep true vertical Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. If a line reads wrong, tap the balloon and fix it.

It should work with no signal

On iPhone and iPad you can download the model pack once and run the whole pipeline on device — find the text, read it, translate it, erase it, set it back. On a plane, in a subway, with the network off. Nothing leaves the device.

Say something to us.

Bugs, a translation that came out wrong, a site the extension cannot read yet, or a series we should test against — we read every message, and a bad page attached to it is the fastest way to get it fixed.
